What is Unintended Learning? Humans are instinctual learners. Learning occurs naturally within everyday life. It is, therefore, unsurprising, that informal learning is often taken for granted or that instances of this type of learning remain unidentified as learning (Eraut, 2004). In attempts to define informal learning, academics have turned to comparing informal learning with formal learning. We often see theorists place types of learning on continuum scales which may lead to assumptions of superiority of formal learner whether this was intended or not. A common implication of this, is the failure to identify the qualities of informal learning (Schugurensky, 2015 as cited in Bourke et al., 2018).
